What is the RA?
The Electrical Apprentice Readiness Assessment (RA for short) is designed to assist aspiring electrical apprentices in understanding how well prepared they are (in terms of their literacy and numeracy skills) for the electrical trade program.
The Literacy section covers Reading and Writing skills at Australian Core Skill Framework (ACSF) level 3, the level recommended to give electrical apprentices the best chance of progressing through the qualification.
The Numeracy section is broken into the fifteen subtopics that underpin the first two years of the electrical trade program. The ACSF standard of the questions ranges from ACSF 1 (5 questions), ACSF 2 (13 questions), ACSF 3 (10 questions) and ACSF 4 (22 questions).
The subtopics covered, and the units they relate to are outlined in the following table.
Who is the RA for?
The RA has a number of prospective customers, including;
-
Prospective apprentices can use the RA to understand the requirements of the training program and which subjects to focus on in Year 11 and 12. Holding an RA certificate can also look good on your resume!
-
Employers can use the RA as part of their recruitment process to ensure they select apprentices ready to hit the ground running.
-
RTOs use the RA to understand which apprentices may require additional support during their training and prevent barriers to progression.
Prepare for success
Results from the RA are broken down by topic to help prospective apprentices understand their areas of strength and weakness. They can take their results back to their Secondary School or RTO for help from their teachers to address these or select to undertake the ‘Practice Readiness Assessment’ self-paced course through Energy Space ($20).
Below is a sample video from the Practice Readiness Assessment course, which helps prospective apprentices understand how trigonometric principles will help them understand how electricity behaves.
